With the holidays behind us, there are a couple of deadlines approaching that I’d like to bring to your attention: the Call for Nominations for AAED's Executive Council and also the process for Associate Members seeking elevation to Fellow status. The submittal deadlines for both are coming up this Spring, and additional details are shown below. We’re also in full swing preparing for our 45th Annual Meeting, August 6-8, taking place in the spectacular Grand Hyatt Baha Mar in Nassau, Bahamas.

Bahamas, Here We Come!
The palm trees and sandy beaches of Nassau, Bahamas, await! Be sure to complete your registration for the 45th Annual Meeting, August 6-8, and make your hotel reservations today. The meeting's theme, "20/20 Esthetic Vision” sets the framework for three days of educational sessions, expert speakers, and networking and social events designed with every dentist, technician, and guest in mind. Keep an eye on the Annual Meeting Website for program information and periodic updates coming soon.

Associate to Fellow Elevation Requests
Associate members, if you are looking to elevate your membership status to Fellow, one of the prerequisites is to speak at one of our scientific sessions. To fulfill this requirement please complete the online speaker application, which will be provided to future annual meeting program chairs for consideration. If you’re interested in achieving Fellow status and believe that you’ve already met the minimum requirements as outlined in Article III, Section 2 of the Academy Bylaws, please submit your official letter of request and current CV to Joe Jackson at AAED headquarters by May 1, 2020.

Call for Nominations for AAED’s Executive Council
AAED is seeking candidates who are interested in serving on the Executive Council. To be considered, you must be a voting member of the Academy (Fellows and dues-paying Life Fellows) and committed to working to advance the mission of the Academy. In addition, you must commit to serving the Executive Council in various positions over a nine-year period beginning with your election, as follows:

Year 1, 2, 3: Director-at-Large
Year 4, 5: Secretary or Treasurer
Year 6: Vice President
Year 7: President-Elect
Year 8: President
Year 9: First Past President

If you are interested or would like to nominate someone, please complete and return the nomination application to AAED headquarters by May 1, 2020. The Nominating Committee will consider the qualifications of all candidates and will create a slate of candidates for presentation to the Executive Council. Once approved by the Council, final candidate(s) will be presented for approval to the voting General Assembly at the Annual Meeting this August 6-8, in Nassau, Bahamas.

If you haven’t already, please be sure to pay your 2020 membership dues by December 31, 2019. Once you log on to the website, feel free to update your member profile to reflect any new changes to credentials, positions, etc.

45th Annual Meeting Registration As you already know, registration for the 45th Annual Meeting, August 6-8, 2020 in Nassau, Bahamas, is now open. From the stunning location to the impressive lineup of the speakers and sessions, the upcoming meeting promises to be a huge success. Be sure to register and make your hotel reservations at The Grand Hyatt Baha Mar today, identifying yourself as an AAED attendee to receive the discounted group rate.

We also have moments set aside throughout the meeting for attendees to connect with one another, including open afternoons to explore the beautiful area surrounding the resort. We’d love to see your colleagues and collaborators at the meeting with you, so don’t forget to submit your invitations for the meeting.

The weather may be turning in your area, but it is beautiful year-round in the Bahamas. Eric and Lily Fugier, as well as Jody and I, just returned from our site visit to plan the 2020 Esthetic Vision experience for you! The hotel, restaurants, casinos, pools and of course the ocean were exceptional. We cannot wait to host you here!

It’s truly an honor to serve as AAED’s 2019-2020 President. I plan to communicate with you regularly to update you on activities throughout the year. 

It was great to see so many of you last month at the 44th Annual Meeting in Banff, Alberta, Canada. I’d like to personally acknowledge Dr. Joel Berg for his outstanding leadership over the past year, and his program chair, Dr. Stephen Chu for his efforts in organizing a scientific program in the Canadian Rockies that was truly memorable. If you were unable to attend the meeting or simply would like to relive the presentations, I encourage you to order the meeting recordings to ensure you don’t miss any information.

Speaking of the Annual Meeting, as a respected member of AAED, you have first access to registration for the 45th Annual Meeting, August 6-8 at the beautiful Grand Hyatt Baha Mar in Nassau, Bahamas. Be sure to register now and to secure your housing for the conference as we explore the theme, “20/20 Vision”. Non-member guest registration opens in November and the housing block will begin to fill quickly after that so make sure you reserve your stay now to ensure a spot. Please note you must first log in as a member and then register for the meeting in order to receive the confirmation that includes information on booking your room.

Since the 45th Annual Meeting is once again “by invitation only”, it is time to send the names and emails of 3-5 guests whom you would like to invite. Each of us is a member in this prestigious and unique Academy because an AAED member reached out to us and invited us to a meeting, eventually leading to membership. It is time for all of us as members to identify the next generation of outstanding clinicians, researchers and educators, invite them to our Annual Meeting, and maybe ultimately to become members. The future of our Academy depends on you! 

I’ve been asked by Dr. Harald Heyman, the esteemed Editor-in-Chief of our official publication, the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, to share with you the JERD 2019 Annual Report. Please take a few minutes to catch up on the status of this outstanding publication, including some terrific new enhancements that are in store!

Recognizing the important role that the academic community plays in the success of our Academy, the Executive Council has appointed a working group charged with looking for ways that AAED can better support our academic members. We’re specifically interested in knowing which of you are currently on faculty at universities, teaching either full-time or at least 80% part-time. If you meet this criteria, please email Michelle VanAlstyne on our staff at michelle.vanalstyne@mci-group.com. She’ll be collecting this information to assist the working group in developing their recommendations.

My term as President for the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry has sadly come to an end. I'm honored to have been able to serve you in this role, to learn and grow in my profession alongside all of you, and to experience the annual meeting in one of the most beautiful destinations in the world, Banff. I'm incredibly pleased with the outcome of the 44th Annual Meeting. Everything, from the educational sessions to mingling with you at the social events to the stunning scenery, had me leaving Canada with a renewed passion for dentistry, and I sincerely hope it did the same for all who attended.

I'd like to personally thank our 2019 Annual Meeting Sponsors for their support and involvement with the Academy. A special thanks is also owed to our Annual Meeting Committee for their hard work on this event over the past year: Program Chair Stephen J. Chu, DMD, MSD, CDT; Local Arrangements Chair and Corporate Relations Chair Jeff Brucia, DDS; Audio Visual Chair Frank Higginbottom, DDS; and Silent Auction Chair, Todd Schoenbaum, DDS. Their commitment and dedication played a large role in the success of the meeting.

Another successful AAED meeting! The setting of Banff was spectacular and we had terrific weather. The hiking, biking, horseback, river rafting, golf, cuisine and everything else we experienced there surpassed our expectations. Joel Berg, you chose an awesome location and we all thank you. Steven Chu, the scientific session was as always - mind-opening, intellectual and stimulating. Naturally, the amazing MCI Chicago staff team led by Joseph Jackson, CAE ensured everything went off perfectly. A big thank you to all!

As we do each year, we lose one valuable board member and gain a new one to help steer the Academy. Jacinthe Paquette moves over to the esteemed Past President roster after giving
AAED so many years of advice and forward-thinking leadership. Brian LeSage joins as a board member who plans to grow membership with millennials and continue the rich tradition of excellence, education, integrity and ethics of the Academy. Joel Berg started several new task force working groups that have instituted new speaker disclosure statements, enhanced our digital poster experience, looked for new ways to support our academic members, and begun the process of investigating the potential to introduce corporate workshops at future annual meetings. I’m excited to see what this next year has in store for the Academy. 

The success of our 44th Annual Meeting has given me new energy and already has me looking ahead to our meeting next year. Mark your calendars now for our 45th Annual Meeting, August 6-8, 2020, at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, Nassau, Bahamas. The meeting's theme, "20/20 Esthetic Vision," will be explored through a number of presentations led by experts in the field.

I’m especially excited about the location of the meeting as it will be held at the idyllic Grand Hyatt Baha Mar. This incredible resort has something to offer everybody including snorkeling, sailing, nightlife, unbelievable cuisine and much more. Afternoons will be open for time around the pool or on the beach with family and friends. Registration and hotel reservations for the 45th Annual Meeting will open mid-September for members, and we will extend invitations to your invited guests in November.

IFED Requests Speakers
The International Federation of Esthetic Dentistry (IFED) has requested that its member academies assist them in the development of an IFED College of Speakers. As part of this process, AAED is being asked to provide a list of 3 of our members who've given presentations at the national level but have not yet had the opportunity to present internationally. IFED member academies will have access to this list as a resource for inviting future speakers to present at their annual meetings around the globe. While no honorariums would be offered, the host academy would be responsible for providing the invited speaker with economy airfare and hotel accommodation. If you're interested in being a part of the IFED College of Speakers, contact AAED Headquarters.

Only a couple months have gone by since the 43rd Annual Meeting in Rancho Palos Verdes, California and I am already getting excited for the upcoming 2019 Annual Meeting in Banff, Alberta, Canada. As a valued member of the Academy, I encourage you to register now for the 44th Annual Meeting and reserve your hotel room before registration opens to non-members on November 5. The 2019 Annual Meeting takes place August 8-10 and our theme is “Disruptive Dentistry: The Challenges Opportunities Ahead,” focusing on the immense possibilities revealed by new technologies and techniques introduced every day in the world of esthetic dentistry.

As a member, you have the opportunity to invite guests to join us in August. Once you register, please submit the names of respected colleagues who you believe would benefit from attending the 44th Annual Meeting. The Academy will extend invitations to those individuals for this invite-only conference. I look forward to the fresh ideas and contributions that your invitees will bring to the field of esthetic dentistry

It's hard to believe this letter will serve as my final message to you before we gather at the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes for our 43rd Annual Meeting. As we work to put the final touches on this gathering, I'm hopeful that it will prove to be a memorable event for you, full of warm connections and a quality educational experience.

My sincerest gratitude goes out to all those who have been involved in the planning and execution of the event, especially our program chairs Markus Blatz and Marc Nevins, as well as each member of the Annual Meeting Committee.

As you prepare for your Southern California visit, make certain you have registered yourself and your guests for our social events to ensure you make the most of your time. We've got a lot planned, from our Opening Party and Closing Gala to tours, tastings, and more.

For those of you who may want a little more adventure off-property, I recommend exploring the various beaches and beautiful coastline (Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Santa Monica) to the North. Or, for more of an "LA Experience," you can travel into Downtown LA, Hollywood, or Beverly Hills.

Lastly, please be sure to look for a message before the meeting on registering for online bidding for the Silent Auction. Your bids are extremely important as all proceeds will benefit future AAED education.

I’m honored to have served the AAED community as president for this past year. I know our Academy will continue to be in great hands under the leadership of Joel Berg next year and into the future with our exceptional Executive Council.

Our upcoming meeting will certainly be a high point for our Academy. Recently, we released the full program for our Annual Meeting on our website, which came together thanks to the dedication of Markus Blatz and Marc Nevins. I encourage you to read through our full lineup of expert speakers presenting on the meeting's theme, The Stars are Aligned: Shaping the Future of Excellence in Esthetics.

The strength of this year's educational program demonstrates the level of dedication we have as a group to advancing esthetic dentistry through research and collaboration. I'd like to encourage you to donate to the 12th Annual Silent Auction to be held at the meeting, as all proceeds support AAED's educational mission.
