Zirconia Update – Which Type to Use?

This presentation will outline the selection criteria for the clinical use of traditional zirconia versus translucent zirconia in light of the most current research data. Clinical parameters for esthetic and implant rehabilitations will be detailed to set optimum indications with an adequate margin of safety.

At the conclusion of this lecture participants will have gained an understanding of:

  1. How to compare properties between traditional zirconia and translucent zirconia
  2. Relevant research data and clinical parameters for routine use of traditional zirconia for single crowns and fixed partial dentures
  3. Relevant research data and clinical parameters for routine use of translucent zirconia


John Burgess, DDS, MS

Dr. Burgess received his dental degree from Emory University School of Dentistry, completed a one-year GPR, and a 2-year general dentistry program in the Air Force. Currently, he is a professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry. He has authored or coauthored over 400 manuscripts, given more than 1000 all-day CE programs nationally and internationally. He served on the Council of Scientific Affairs for the ADA, is a member of the Restorative Academy, Operative Academy, Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, The American and International Associations for Dental Research, and the American Dental Association. He is active in clinical trials examining the effectiveness of ceramic materials, adhesives, bulk cured composted and bioactive materials. He has been married to Patricia, a wonderful lady, for more than 30 years.

Gerard Chiche, DDS

Dr. Chiche is the Thomas P. Hinman Endowed Chair in Restorative Dentistry and the Director of the Center for Esthetic & Implant Dentistry at Augusta University, Georgia Dental College. He is a Past President of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and the author of two Quintessence textbooks: Esthetics of Anterior Fixed Restorations, and Smile Design - A Guide for Clinician, Ceramist and Patient. In 2009, he was the first recipient of the Endowed Chair sponsored by the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Society.
